There are birthdays, and then there are moments of true history. At Forthland Lodge Care Home in Edinburgh, resident Isabella Mitchell recently celebrated a milestone few ever reach – her 102nd birthday.
Born and raised in Edinburgh, Isabella has spent over a century immersed in the life, spirit, and beauty of Auld Reekie. Her story is one of local love, resilience, and community – a living link to the heart of the city’s past.
Isabella attended Milton House School on the Canongate, right in the heart of the Old Town. It was there that she met Andrew, her future husband. Their bond would span decades, growing into a marriage full of love, laughter, and shared memories. The couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in October 2008, receiving a congratulatory letter from Her Majesty the Queen – a moment Isabella fondly recalls.
After school, Isabella began her working life at Duncan’s Chocolate Factory. It was a sweet start to a long and fulfilling life rooted in the city she’s always called home. Over the years, she’s watched Edinburgh change and flourish – through times of peace, war, and progress. Her stories from each chapter of the past century offer a rich insight into the lived history of one of the UK’s most iconic cities.
Isabella’s deep roots in the capital have shaped not only her outlook but also her sense of community. She’s always been surrounded by family, friends, and neighbours – something that remains true today at Forthland Lodge, where she’s made her home in recent years.
To mark Isabella’s incredible milestone, the team at Forthland Lodge hosted a heartwarming birthday celebration. Balloons, flowers, and a delicious cake set the scene for an afternoon filled with love and laughter. Isabella was joined by her beloved daughter, Isobel, as well as her nephew Billy and his wife Lorraine.
Wendy Forbes, manager at Forthland Lodge, shared:
“Isabella’s deep ties to the city of Edinburgh and the life she has built here over more than a century are a testament to her enduring spirit and character. Her 102 years represent not just personal longevity, but a living connection to Edinburgh's history and the countless memories that make up a life well-lived. She’s an inspiration to all of us, and we were honoured to share her special day and host a little party that was as fabulous as she is.”
