Hatching Happiness: Ducklings Bring Smiles to Kelvinside Manor

Something very special happened at Kelvinside Manor recently - and it involved feathers, fluff, and a whole lot of excitement.

As part of a new wellbeing initiative, our residents were treated to a heart-warming experience when five ducklings hatched right here inside the home. Yes, you read that right - baby ducklings! From tiny cracks in their eggs to their first wobbly swims in a paddling pool, it’s safe to say they stole the show.

The eggs arrived all the way from County Durham and were gently placed in a small incubator in one of our communal spaces, where residents and colleagues could check in on them throughout the day. Within just a few hours, the eggs began to wiggle, and little cracks started to appear - and the next day, all five ducklings had made their grand entrance into the world.

“It was magical to watch the little cracks appear and then see the ducklings emerge,” said resident Sylvia. “It brought such joy and excitement to the home.”

Once their feathers dried, they were moved into a specially prepared enclosure, complete with a heat lamp and cosy bedding. But they didn’t stay still for long - within 24 hours, they were ready to take their first swims. Under the watchful eyes of residents and our care team, the ducklings naturally enjoyed their first paddling pool experience - with lots of splashing and squeaking.

Beyond being adorable (which they absolutely were), the duckling experience allowed residents to reconnect with nature, reminisce about childhood memories, and have something truly joyful to talk about with their visitors. For many, it was the first time in years they’d seen a duckling up close - and for some, the first time ever.

As part of the project, we were thrilled to welcome local children from Westend Adventure Kelvindale to meet the ducklings too. The visit brought an extra buzz to the home, with young and older generations coming together to share in the moment - and a few cuddles with the ducklings too.

“The whole experience was lovely,” said Veronica Dormer, Home Manager at Kelvinside Manor. “It was calming, it was uplifting, and it sparked so many conversations. It’s definitely something we’ll be doing again.”

After spending ten days with us - and becoming mini-celebrities in the process - the ducklings were safely taken to a local farm, where they’ll now be part of a breeding programme.

While we were sad to see them go, the experience has left a lasting impression on everyone here. It’s a great example of the kind of care and creativity we’re proud to offer at Kelvinside Manor - not just looking after people, but helping them live well, laugh often, and try something new.

As one of Meallmore’s newest homes, we’re already building something different here - a place full of connection, curiosity and community spirit. With our official opening just around the corner on 11th June, this duckling experience is just the beginning.

And if you ask us, life’s a little better with ducklings.
