Generations United: Mearns House Residents Back Local Football Talent

There’s a new team of football supporters in Newton Mearns – and they’re full of passion, pride and community spirit. Residents from Mearns House Care Home recently became the newest fans of Mearns Football Academy, cheering from the sidelines and showing just how powerful intergenerational connection can be.

As part of a new partnership between the care home and the local youth team, Mearns House has sponsored two under-12 squads – Mearns Football Academy City and Mearns Football Academy Spurs – providing high-quality team shirts and kits for the players as they represent their community on and off the pitch.

To celebrate the collaboration, residents Bob, Alistair, Liz and Albert headed down to support the teams in action. From waving flags and shouting encouragement, to chatting with fellow fans and soaking up the buzz of live sport, the visit proved to be a joyful, heartwarming afternoon for everyone involved.

Bridging Generations Through Shared Passions

Based at Mearns Primary School, the Academy’s 2013 age group includes 32 boys aged 11–12. The club relies on sponsorship to support kit, training equipment and opportunities for the players – and Meallmore’s support has helped elevate the experience for the children, giving them a professional look and a real sense of pride.

But this partnership is about more than shirts – it’s about community. Many Mearns House residents have lived in the local area for decades, with strong family links to the schools and sports clubs that shape the next generation.

Kirsty Craig, Home Manager at Mearns House, explained:

“We’re proud to sponsor our local football team as part of our commitment to embracing community spirit and supporting the younger generation. It’s been so rewarding to see how this has created shared experiences across age groups.
“For our residents, especially those with a passion for sport, being able to watch a live game and cheer from the sidelines supports both mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s those little moments – the buzz of a crowd, the joy of a win – that bring life and care together.”

The visit also sparked memories and conversation among residents – many of whom played or supported football themselves over the years.

Building Confidence and Camaraderie

Brian Forbes, Coach at Mearns Football Academy, added:

“We’re incredibly grateful to Mearns House for their support. The new kits have given our players a real boost – they look smart and feel proud wearing them. And the residents who came to the game were just brilliant. Their energy and enthusiasm really made the day.”

The partnership has created a meaningful, two-way connection – one where residents feel part of the local community, and young people gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for older generations.

At Meallmore, we believe in creating great places to live and work, and that includes reaching out beyond our walls. By supporting grassroots sport, building intergenerational relationships and championing local talent, Mearns House is showing how care homes can play an active role in their communities – full of heart, purpose and pride.

We’re already looking forward to the next match.
