Newton Mearns Care Home Brings the Community Together

Connecting generations, celebrating friendship, and showcasing the warmth of care in Newton Mearns

At Meallmore’s Mearns House Care Home in Newton Mearns, located on the south side of Glasgow, the spirit of autumn came alive as residents, families, and local community groups gathered for the home’s first-ever “Fall into Friendship Fête” - a joyful celebration of togetherness, creativity, and community spirit.

The event welcomed guests from across East Renfrewshire and beyond, transforming the care home into a hub of music, laughter, and seasonal colour, all within a safe environment for residents and guests. From pumpkin-themed crafts to ceilidh dancing and home-baked treats, it was a day that truly reflected what Meallmore stands for - creating great places to live and work, where life is filled with meaning, connection, and care, thanks to our friendly team who helped make the event a success.

A Celebration of Seasons and Friendship in East Renfrewshire

The Fall into Friendship Fête was the first event of its kind at Mearns House, one of Meallmore’s flagship care homes in Newton Mearns, and it brought together people of all ages - from residents and colleagues to local nursery children and families.

Eight talented dancers from the Meikle Scottish Country Dancing Group kicked off the afternoon with traditional ceilidh performances, filling the lounge with lively music and applause. The energy continued as singer Robyn Brooks performed a set of crowd favourites, encouraging residents to join in, sing along, and even take to the floor for a dance or two.

As laughter filled the air, the home’s shared spaces were transformed into a cosy autumn festival - complete with a “pumpkin patch” silent disco and craft stations for guests of all ages. Children from Kirkhill Gait Nursery and Calderwood Lodge Nursery were among the day’s special visitors, creating leaf crowns, decorating pumpkins, and enjoying story-time sessions with residents.

The intergenerational element added something truly special. The children’s giggles and curiosity sparked smiles and conversation. At the same time, residents shared stories about their own childhood autumns, proof that the connection between generations remains one of the most powerful forms of wellbeing. Events like this help residents and their loved ones create lasting memories together, strengthening family bonds and making everyone feel part of the care home community.

Creativity, Colour, and Connection

While the youngest guests were busy crafting, residents and their families joined in with a wreath-making competition and a relaxed “craft corner”, where colleagues and visitors could make keepsakes together. Colleagues provided assistance to ensure that all residents and guests could participate fully, regardless of ability. The home’s team members also showed off their creative flair, competing for the title of Best-Dressed Scarecrow - a contest that filled the corridors with laughter (and a few straw hats).

The Mearns House catering team outdid themselves with a delicious spread of seasonal favourites. Guests enjoyed freshly made pumpkin soup, sweet potato pie, hot dogs, apple pie, and traditional toffee apples, all served with a smile and that signature Meallmore warmth. The home’s café area was transformed into a mini farmers’ market - a celebration of local produce, Scottish hospitality, and simple pleasures.

The day was about more than just festivities; it was about bringing people together. Every moment, from the first dance to the last bite of apple pie, captured the sense of friendship and belonging that defines life in a Meallmore care home, where residents feel supported in their daily activities and social engagement.

“Our Fall into Friendship Fête was such a wonderful event, and we were thrilled to have so many people join us for the afternoon. It was a joy to see so many residents up and dancing along to Robyn’s beautiful singing, and the ceilidh dancers got everyone clapping and tapping their feet.

The caring team did a fantastic job of creating a festive gathering that truly captured the spirit of the season. It was a cheerful, colourful, cosy afternoon, with something to put a smile on everyone’s faces. From the silent disco to the many crafting activities – everyone got involved and enjoyed themselves. A huge thanks to all who attended and to Robyn Brooks and the Meikle Scottish Country Dancing Group for their outstanding performances. The residents are already asking when we can do it again!”
